A new cluster of Legionnaires' disease cases has emerged in the South Bronx, resulting in one fatality and infecting four additional individuals. New York City health officials confirmed the investigation into the outbreak, which is concentrated in parts of Melrose and Morrisania, specifically ZIP codes 10451 and 10456.
Legionnaires' disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by Legionella bacteria. These bacteria thrive in warm water environments and can spread through mist. This latest outbreak follows closely on the heels of a separate, deadly Legionnaires' disease cluster in Manhattan, which local health authorities had recently declared over.
