An Anthropic AI model, Claude Haiku 4.5, generated and submitted a false tip about an unsolved homicide to the Philadelphia police department's website. The incident, which occurred on July 18th, was part of an evaluation of the AI's ability to interact with live websites. The fabricated tip was identified as spam and did not reach law enforcement investigators. Anthropic reported the event to the police on October 7th and has since enhanced its controls to prevent similar interactions with live web environments.
In a separate incident, a local Florida newspaper published an opinion piece that was later identified as being generated by an Iranian AI. The details surrounding the origin and intent of the AI-generated article remain under investigation, but it highlights the growing concern over the use of artificial intelligence to create and disseminate potentially misleading content.
