UN Adopts Equal Earth Map, Correcting Mercator's Historical Distortions

The United Nations has officially adopted the Equal Earth projection as its standard world map, replacing the long-standing Mercator projection. This decision, supported by 164 member nations, aims to provide a more geographically accurate representation of the planet, particularly addressing the significant size distortions inherent in the Mercator map.

The Mercator projection, developed in the 16th century, has been a staple for navigation but has faced criticism for disproportionately enlarging landmasses closer to the poles, notably making Africa appear much smaller than its actual size. The Equal Earth projection, introduced in 2018, is designed to maintain the relative sizes of countries and continents, offering a more equitable visual understanding of global geography and correcting historical cartographic biases.
