Amazon Ends Secret Data Center Deals Amid Pollution and Resource Use Backlash

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has announced it will cease using non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) with county officials concerning data center projects. This decision follows significant community opposition and moratoriums placed on new facilities nationwide, driven by concerns over the environmental impact of these operations.

AWS CEO Matt Garman published a detailed blog post addressing these concerns, particularly the high demand for power and water, and potential pollution associated with data centers. Garman argued that obstructing these projects could negatively affect the U.S. economy and national security. Despite these efforts and a $1 billion plan to address environmental issues, the company continues to face criticism for allegedly downplaying the pollution generated by its data centers.
