Ex-Deputy Acquitted in Shooting Death of Airman Roger Fortson

A Florida jury has acquitted former sheriff's deputy Eddie Duran of manslaughter with a firearm in the shooting death of Roger Fortson, a Black US Air Force airman. The incident occurred when deputies responded to a false domestic disturbance call at Fortson's apartment.

Fortson was shot by Duran after opening his apartment door with a gun in his hand. The jury deliberated for approximately two hours before reaching their not guilty verdict. Duran, 38, had faced a potential sentence of up to 30 years in prison if convicted.
